I am a record collector; I love the sound quality and feel of music recorded on vinyl.
I have my DJ roots in Mexico City’s underground clubbing scene, where a rich mix of cultural influences developed in me a passion for a diverse spectrum of rare world grooves. My freestyle sets seek to offer an international map of chilled-out global electronica, Latin Jazz, flamenco hip hop, salsa, cumbia and funk.
Some sample sets of mine under the neverneutral and Sr Priego names:
In Mexico City I co-founded the Alcachofa Sound Arts Collective (1995) and the Parador Análogo Sound System (2000). I created sound installations based on vinyl records & magnetic tapes, and organised, curated and promoted independent music festivals and underground club nights. I collaborated and co-hosted various live radio shows, including the experimental music “Tiempo y espacio” show in what used to be the influential Rock 101 FM station and “Ex-perimento” in Radio UNAM, in Mexico City.
In the mid and late 90s and early noughties was behind now-legendary nights such as Igloo (El Marro, Salón México) Selecta’ and Profunda (Parador Análogo, La Perla) and Indietronic Melancholics (Non Solo Jazz) amongst many others. I was a musical adviser for the Mexico City Arts Festival, which also co-organised the Mexico City Love Parade amongst other major events.
Since 2006 I’ve done several Sofa Sessions & Sonido Chipotle nights in London, where I’ve DJed old-school Latin (Cuban son; bugalú, cumbia, New York salsa), jazz, funk, dub, rare groove & deep house in venues and events including Shunt, the Thames Festival, Notting Hill Arts Club, Salmon & Compass, Sevilla Mía, Camino, Passing Clouds & various gastropubs across the capital.
My main podcast including live recordings of my DJ sets is Unnecessary Noise (I took the name from a sign I saw once in New York’s West 4th Street).
