I‘ve always believed one must try to do the walk, not just the talk. Or as we used to say back in the prehistoric days, we need hacking, not just yacking. My module’s coursework requires creating a zine, so I made a quick how-to zine for my students.
I made this quick-and-dirty zine to show students that creating a zine is indeed possible. You can make it with very basic resources. This may be obvious for those already familiar with zines and zinemaking. However, it is not obvious if you are completely new to them. (Nothing is as hard or easy, or complicated or simple, as it may seem to others. We all have different experiences of everything).
The document can be viewed, shared and downloaded from figshare:
Ernesto Priego. 2026. How to Make your INM317 Design Justice Zine: A Simple Guide Zine. DOI: https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.31807435.v3
I have shared three slightly different versions so far. This is to document my progress. It also shows students how that works on figshare. I may still make some minor changes. Copies will be photocopied and given to students as additional coursework guidance.
(By the way, I also created a couple of booklet templates that I may share openly online later too. I haven’t uploaded the templates to Moodle yet. Saying this in case some keen student happens to read this and looks for them before I upload them. I beg patience! All in due time).
